Scott Miller, MD discusses two of the most important factors to consider when getting breast augmentation to achieve natural-looking results.

San Diego, CA—As one of the top cosmetic surgeries performed each year, breast augmentation is no doubt a highly sought after procedure. Among the large number of women who receive breast implants, Dr. Scott Miller, a plastic surgeon in San Diego, explains there is typically one main goal with the surgery: to enhance their breasts and complement their body while maintaining a natural appearance. He notes that two factors, in particular, play a strong role in the final outcome of the procedure.

Breast implant size is a major concern for many individuals undergoing breast augmentation. Dr. Miller reveals that patients are often unaware of which size is best for reaching their aesthetic goals, fearing they may go too large or too small. To help them find their ideal size, Dr. Miller takes measurements of their anatomy and listens to what they hope to achieve. He often encourages patients to bring picture examples to help him understand exactly what is desired. Finally, he uses a specialized sizing system which helps patients visualize the changes they seek.

In addition to the size, Dr. Miller emphasizes that breast implant placement can significantly affect the final result. He says implants placed over or under the muscle can each provide beautiful results for the right candidate. According to the experienced surgeon, over the muscle is an option for those with adequate breast and skin tissue, especially if an implant is already present in that location. It often has the benefit of providing a faster and more comfortable recovery. Under the muscle, however, Dr. Miller says is ideal for most women, especially those with little to no breast tissue. He says this placement helps disguise the shape and texture of the implant, as well as provide a subtle slope to the breast. Furthermore, it protects nipple sensation, limits capsular hardening, and allows for better mammograms. Dr. Miller says it also provides better long-term support.

While breast implant size and placement are both important for reaching the desired outcome, Dr. Miller stresses, above all, that patients interested in breast augmentation should seek a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced with the procedure. By doing so, he says they are receiving care under the highest of safety and aesthetic standards.
