Dr. Scott Miller talks about what to expect from rhinoplasty (nose surgery), one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in America.

San Diego, CA – According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, nearly 150,000 people had some form of rhinoplasty in 2014, making nose surgery one of the top five most popular plastic surgery procedures in the US. Dr. Scott Miller, a plastic surgeon in San Diego and the La Jolla area, often sees individuals who are considering the procedure. He says many patients who have rhinoplasty are looking to address what may have been lifelong issues with the function and/or appearance of their nose. Dr. Miller says, while rhinoplasty can have a positive effect on the entire facial aesthetic, it’s important that people understand what to expect from the procedure and have a thorough knowledge of what the treatment process will entail.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery can offer numerous benefits, improving or enhancing the shape, size, and overall appearance of the nose. The procedure can make the nasal bridge look smaller, reshape the nostrils, increase or decrease the size of the nose, and ultimately create a better balance and harmony among facial features. Dr. Miller says rhinoplasty can also be performed to correct a deviated septum and address breathing problems. He notes that advanced rhinoplasty techniques and the hands of a skilled surgeon can often create results that meet the patient’s goals while looking very natural. Dr. Miller says the procedure itself can be performed on an outpatient basis, and the incisions are typically placed in very inconspicuous areas, allowing for residual scarring that is virtually unnoticeable.

As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty does have risks, and Dr. Miller says patients should know about some of the potential complications, however rare they may be. He notes that infection, numbness, excessive swelling, dissatisfaction with the results, and even complications that may require a revision rhinoplasty procedure are just some of the risks involved. Dr. Miller says plastic surgeons who are experienced with this procedure do everything possible to minimize risks, and the patient can also help by strictly adhering to post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing after surgery.

Dr. Miller says, while recovery from rhinoplasty ultimately depends on the specifics of an individual’s treatment and his or her unique physiology, most patients are able to resume work or other daily routines after about one week. He notes that pain can be managed with medication, and bruising should fade within 7 to 10 days; however, Dr. Miller says, there will likely be some degree of swelling for weeks and even months after rhinoplasty surgery. After this period, the full results from rhinoplasty should be apparent.

Overall, Dr. Miller says, it’s important for patients to meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience with rhinoplasty procedures before deciding to have the treatment. He notes that individuals considering this procedure should never be afraid to ask questions and make sure they feel comfortable with their surgeon. Ultimately, Dr. Miller believes successful rhinoplasty procedures can significantly enhance one’s facial aesthetic and address years of self-consciousness caused by unhappiness with his or her nasal appearance.
