How Do Breasts Change with Aging?

With aging comes a number of changes in the face and body that may be less than favorable. Over time, you will likely notice differences in the look and feel of your breasts. San Diego plastic surgeon Scott Miller, MD explains how aging can affect the breast tissue and offers long-term solutions to restore your desired breast contours.

In general, the body produces less estrogen as you get older, causing the skin to lose the hydration necessary to stay tight and elastic. Breast tissue also grows softer, less dense, and more fatty, especially when patients become pregnant or enter menopause. Due to these fluctuations in hormone production, the following breast changes are common:

  • Loss of volume and firmness
  • Nipples that point downward
  • The development of stretch marks
  • A wider space between the breasts
  • A more elongated, pendulous, or “flattened” look

While the aesthetic concerns listed above do not present any medical necessity, they can lead to self-consciousness and diminish your confidence. Fortunately, unwanted changes in the breasts don’t have to be permanent. At our San Diego practice, Dr. Miller can develop a personalized treatment plan to renew the shape and positioning of your breasts with a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a combination of both procedures. When performed together, this joint surgery is known as a breast lift with implants. For many patients, a breast lift plus augmentation can powerfully improve the shape, firmness, symmetry, contours, and projection of the breasts, achieving the best possible rejuvenation.

Dr. Miller would be happy to discuss potential treatment options with you based on your overall goals. Reach out to our La Jolla-area office today to schedule a consultation or to speak with a member of our team.
