Though the vast majority of patients are very satisfied with the outcome of their breast surgery, some women are unhappy with their results. If you have have undergone breast augmentation with another plastic surgeon and are dissatisfied, Dr. Scott Miller offers breast revision surgery to help you achieve the look you initially desired. Since breast revision surgery addresses muscles and tissues that have already been operated on, this procedure requires the experience of an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Miller specializes in creating breasts that both look and feel natural, helping you achieve the beautiful results you initially expected.
Benefits of Breast Revision
There are four main reasons why women typically choose to undergo breast revision surgery:
- Exchange the breast implants for another type
- Resolve complications, like capsular contracture
- Replace a deflated or ruptured implant
- Remove the breast implants to return to your original breast size
When women desire a change to their implants, they may choose to switch from saline to silicone implants (or vice versa), increase or decrease size, or change the location of the implant. It is not uncommon for some women who have been relatively happy with a breast implant placed over the muscle to decide that placement under the muscle can provide them with a more natural look and feel.
Though implant deflation or rupture rates are only about 1% for each year after breast augmentation, breast revision surgery can be used to replace an implant should it become damaged. If you believe you have a deflated or ruptured implant, please schedule an appointment with an experienced plastic surgeon as soon as possible to address this concern. For women with saline implants, a deflated implant will be immediately obvious. Women with silicone implants may not immediately notice a rupture. As a result, Dr. Miller recommends that women with silicone implants consider an MRI screening 7-10 years after their initial breast augmentation ensure the silicone shell is intact. An MRI screening every other year after that point can help prevent an undetected rupture.
The Breast Revision Procedure
Breast revision surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure and uses general anesthesia. The duration of your breast revision will depend upon the extent of your surgical needs. In some cases, the same incisions can be used to replace your implants. If you are choosing to change the location of your breast implants from above the muscle to below the muscle, a new pocket will be created to receive the implant. Each breast revision surgery is designed to deliver the most natural, beautiful looking results possible.
Recovery from Breast Revision
The nature of your recovery from breast revision surgery will vary depending upon the specifics of your tailored procedure. In most cases, this recovery period is very similar to the recovery from breast augmentation. Dr. Miller recommends that patients avoid strenuous activities and exercise for the first six weeks while the body heals, though most patients feel comfortable enough to return to their normal daily activities within a few days.
