For
women with small, underdeveloped breasts or breasts
that have shrunk or atrophied after child bearing,
no exercises, devices, or medications will change breast
size. Breast augmentation can help.
There
are four common incisions that can be used: 1)
in the fold on the lower part of the breast just
above where it touches the chest, 2) around
the areola, the dark pink skin surrounding the
nipple, 3) in the armpit and 4) through the belly
button. The approach used depends on the patient
and their surgeon.
A pocket is created
either directly under the tissue or underneath the
muscle. The choice depends on the surgeon's judgment
and the patient's physique. The implant is placed
in the pocket and a few stitches close the incision.
The procedure takes
about 1-2 hours. Dressings consist of gauze and a
bra. Medication is given for pain and discomfort,
which subsides in 2-3 days. There is minimal bruising
and swelling that disappears gradually. Patients
are up and around in a day or two, but should avoid
overhead lifting. Sutures are out within a week and
scars fade gradually, usually becoming barely noticeable.
There may be some degree of firmness and loss in
nipple sensitivity immediately after the operation,
but usually the breast softens and sensitivity returns.

Gravity,
pregnancy, breast feeding, and weight gain and loss all take
their toll on the female breasts' size, shape, and feel.
They sag, soften, flatten and sometimes shrink.
A breast lift can rejuvenate,
firm up, and shape up older appearing breasts. It can also
reduce the size of an enlarged, stretched areola (the dark
pink skin around the nipple). The incisions are around
the areola and, when necessary, along the natural contours
of the breast. Once the excess skin is removed, the nipple,
areola, and breast tissue are lifted up to a more youthful,
natural position and the remaining skin aligned to reshape
the breast.
The procedure takes about
2 hours with dressings consisting of gauze and a bra. Medication
usually controls any discomfort, which subsides in a few
days, as do swelling and any bruising. There may be a temporary
loss of nipple sensation, which will improve with time.
Patients are usually up and around in a day or two. Sutures
come out within two weeks. The scars fade with time and
are easily concealed by a normal bra. Since they are around
and, occasionally, below the nipples, they should not be
noticeable even in low cut clothing or a bathing suit.
Afterward, many women find
their younger, healthier figures give them a renewed self-esteem
and self-confidence.

Big
breasts can be a big problem, both physically and psychologically.
Oversized breasts dominate a woman's appearance and make
her look top heavy and obese. In addition, they can be quite
burden, causing pain, postural distortion, difficulty breathing,
backache, breast crease irritation, and difficulty exercising.
Excessive breasts are also a mental burden leading to stares,
rude comments and unwelcome attention.
Breast reduction can reduce
and reshape large breasts. An oversized areola (the dark
pink skin around the nipple) can be made smaller. Breasts
will still fluctuate in size afterwards, increasing with
weight gain, birth control pills, or pregnancy. It may
impair the ability to breast feed.
To firm up and shape the breast,
excess tissue, fat, and skin are removed and redraped through
incisions made horizontally and vertically along the natural
contour of the breast to firm up and shape the breast.
The nipple and areola attached to the underlying tissue
are moved to a higher, more aesthetic location. When breasts
are extremely oversized, it is sometimes necessary to completely
detach and relocate the nipple. Dressings consist of gauze
and a surgical bra.
The procedure takes 3 to 4
hours. Medication controls the discomfort for a few days
after surgery and patients are up and around in a day or
two. Swelling and bruising usually subsides in a few days
and patients usually return to work in about 2 weeks. Scars
remain very visible for about a year and then fade somewhat.
As they are around and below the nipples, they should not
be noticeable in clothing.
Breast reduction gives women
a lighter feel as well as look and often provides the motivation
and freedom to pursue a healthier lifestyle.
